Mariam Tovmasian Graphic Designer

Mariam is a visual artist and illustrator based in London, with a love for visual storytelling. Her practice is particularly focused on sequential visual arts, where she explores the interplay between images and words to push the boundaries of narrative possibilities.

In 2025, she participated in the Tokyo Biennale as one of five international artists, creating a cyanotype installation developed from objects collected during a two-month residency in the city.

In 2023, she received the Creative Entrepreneur grant from Creative Armenia, which supported the publication of her debut graphic novel, We Can Plan a Murder and Start a Religion. The project culminated in her first solo exhibition in Yerevan in 2024.

Alongside this work, she created 100 Days of Comics, a diary-style autobiographical comic that began as an Instagram series and was later self-published and launched at the Edinburgh Comics & Arts Fair. Mariam has also exhibited her comics at Thought Bubble Festival, the UK’s largest comics convention.

Alongside her artistic practice, she works as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer.

A SUNWALKS: A SANPO ARCHIVE - A print installation during Tokyo Biennale 2025

Suspended, transperent street installation

A cyanotype installation developed during my residency at the Tokyo Biennale, created through collecting discarded objects found during sanpo— aimless walks through the city. Using sunlight-based printing, the artist has captured impressions of everyday fragments such as fruit peels, packaging, and cigarette boxes. Accompanied by short texts inspired by Japanese literature, the work forms a fragmented portrait of Tokyo through the traces people leave behind.
