Auction - The Collection of Professor Charles Dowsett

This spring, a remarkable selection of books from the working library of Professor Charles Dowsett—one of the founding figures of Armenian studies in the UK—will be offered at auction by Sworders. As many of you know, Professor Dowsett's library formed a major and foundational part of the Armenian Institute's library. After a careful deaccessioning process, we are auctioning off the works that fall beyond the scope of our library to gain much needed space in our offices, fundraise for the continued safeguarding of our collections, and extend the life of a subset of Dowsett's library that might benefit another voracious reader, scholar, or enthusiast. To learn more about the collection, please read a blog by Sworders here

As part of the process, our Operations Manager, Erin Piñon - an art and book historian — reviewed a number of the specialist lots, which include notable rarities such as a 17th-century edition of Tertullian's Opera Omnia, Thomas Allom’s richly illustrated 19th-century China, and early philological works like Junius’s 18th-century Etymologicum Anglicanum. Whether you are a collector, researcher, or supporter of the Armenian Institute, participating in the sale is a meaningful way to engage with Professor Dowsett's legacy and our future.

Proceeds from this charity auction will directly support us at the Armenian Institute, and the preservation and continued growth of our library and the core Dowsett Collection, ensuring that this scholarly heritage remains accessible for future generations.

Check out all of the lots here and happy bidding!

The auction of the lot has attracted the attention of Fine Books Magazine and Antique Trade Gazette.
